Labor Day weekend is great time to show off your grilling skills!

There is nothing wrong with a classic burger, but Grandma would like to challenge you to try something different! Whether you go healthy and green or meaty and lean, these recipes are sure to have your guests coming back for seconds.

This vegan and gluten free burger is healthy and easy to make, on top of being delicious!

INGREDIENTS

½ cup scallions, chopped
½ tsp garlic, minced
¼ tsp fresh green chilies, minced
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
3 cups drained, canned black beans, dried and mashed
1/3 cup black bean liquid (from can)
3 tbsp ground flax seeds
½ cup crushed gluten-free corn tortilla chips
1 tsp ground toasted coriander
½ tsp ground toasted cumin
¼ tsp Pink Himalayan sea salt
¼ tsp ground black pepper
½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
Optional: shredded red cabbage, lime for garnish

DIRECTIONS

Sautee the scallions, garlic and fresh green chilies in olive oil for 1 minute. Add to mashed black beans along with the rest of the ingredients. Stir until combined and scoop out mixture into 1 cup portions. Form patties and sear in a hot pan with a drizzle of EVOO.
Serve on bun or alone with vegan lime aioli, sliced tomatoes, lettuce and pickles, or serve with shredded red cabbage, cilantro and lime juice.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
1 1/3 pounds ground beef sirloin
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
1/2 cup diced white onion
1 clove garlic, minced
 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
4 slices pepperjack cheese
4 hamburger buns, split
4 leaves lettuce

 

DIRECTIONS

Preheat grill for medium-high heat. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the ground sirloin, jalapeño pepper, onion, garlic, 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce using your hands. Divide into 4 balls, and flatten into patties. Lightly oil the grilling surface, and place the patties on the grill. Cook for about 5 minutes per side, or until well done. During the last 2 minutes, lay a slice of cheese on top of each patty. Spread the seasoned mayonnaise onto the insides of the buns. Put burgers in the buns, and top with lettuce and tomato to serve.

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. ground chicken
1 avocado, mashed
1/3 c. bread crumbs
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tbsp. parsley, finely chopped
1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp. vegetable oil
Burger buns, for serving
Lettuce, for serving
Sliced tomato, for serving
Sliced red onion, for serving

DIRECTIONS

In a large bowl, combine chicken with avocado, bread crumbs, garlic, parsley and red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine and season with salt and pepper. Form the mixture into 4 patties. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil. Place patties in the skillet and cook until golden brown on one side, 4 to 5 minutes. Flip the patties, and cook another 3 to 5 minutes until cooked through, or until a thermometer inserted into the middle of the burger reads 165°. Serve on a bun with lettuce, tomato and onion.
